APRIL 25, 2021:
Greetings Riverlands 100 and Relay Runners!
Just about 2 weeks until ready, set, GO!  Hope you’re ready for a great weekend!  Our volunteers are getting excited, making final preparations for the aid stations and post race party.  Below is all the important information about the big events.  We’re pretty sure we thought of everything, but if you have any additional questions or concerns, please let us know at the pre-race meeting.
PRE-RACE MEETING:
Saturday, May 1st at 5:00pm.
Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81604441015?
Passcode: 918210
  • This meeting will be recorded and the link will be available on our website a day or two later.
  • We will cover important Covid Procedures, rules, times, trail marking,  and crew info.  One member of each relay team must attend this meeting.
  • This meeting is limited to 100 attendees - please have your crew members and relay teammates watch the recording later if need be.  Relays, please only send one representative from your team.
There are a lot of details in this email that may not be on our website - please take the time to read it through carefully to help you plan and avoid any race-day disappointments!
Friday, May 7th
Packet Pick-up:
3:00PM to 6:00PM
Martin Stream Campground
1 Martin Stream Rd., Turner, ME
There will be no packet pick-up day of race.  All runners must pick up their packet during this time.  Relay teams send one runner to pick up the team's packet.  Relay teams: Please have signed waivers from every teammate along with your race day order.  We will cover bib numbers and handoffs at the pre-race meeting.
Drop bags (solo runners only):
3:00PM - 7PM
Solo runners must leave drop bags at the designated area at Martin Stream Campground.  Please note the drop bag size limitations for aid stations listed below.  All drop bags must be marked with runner’s number and aid station name:
Start/Finish Aid Station:  drop bags may be any size - Runners place these at drop bag area race day morning.
Middle Earth Aid Station: bags only, no plastic bins/totes, 18” x 15” max (Ziploc large works)
Conant Rd Aid Station: bags preferred, but small totes permitted 18”x12”x6” or smaller

A note about the weather:
Spring weather in Maine can be very finicky.  Even if it doesn’t seem like it will be cold overnight, fatigue and being low on nutrition/hydration can greatly impact your experience.  When we held the race in 2019 it was very warm and sunny during the day and dropped down to below freezing very quickly when the sun went down. Many runners were caught off guard without warm clothes and several had to drop due to near hypothermia.  Be prepared: plan on having warm clothes close by (in your pack, in a drop bag, etc) to put on before sunset to stay ahead of the chill.
Saturday, May 8th
Parking:  Parking is available at Androscoggin Riverlands State park.  Overflow parking is available along the road and at the Boat Launch on Center Bridge Rd (just south of the park entrance on the right before you cross the bridge).
Can I Have a Tent at the S/F? We do have a no tent rule because the parking lot is so full and we can’t spare extra parking spaces for tents.  The aid station will have two tents, a fire pit, and drop bag area.  That said, as Covid-spacing allows, some people opt to set up a pop up tent right over their car tailgate.  But please be mindful of the cars around you and if you are taking up more space than a standard car space ‘footprint’.
Bathrooms/Pre-Race:
There is an outhouse and there will be five port-a-potties at the start/finish.  Please maintain physical distancing while waiting.
Start Times:
6:00AM sharp
The start is located in the main entrance parking lot of Androscoggin Riverlands State park, 1005 Center Bridge Rd, Turner.
Runners should be assembled by 5:50 for any final instructions.  We will require runners to maintain a 6-foot distance from one another at the start and wear a mask.  There will be a designated start area in which to assemble.
Aid Stations:
All food will be in individual waxed paper baggies at all aid stations for Covid safety.
Volunteers involved with any food prep will be gloved and masked.
As you approach the aid stations, please mask up if distancing isn’t an option.
Start/Finish
Solo runners return to start/finish at 25, 50, 75, and 100 miles
Relay runners return to start/finish at 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 miles
Distance to next aid station 6.2 miles for solo, 4 miles for relay
Relay exchange takes place at Start/Finish
Middle Earth (heading out to the Conant Rd turnaround)
Solo runners will pass this aid station at 6.2, 31.2, 56.2, and 81.2 miles
Relay runners will pass this aid station at 4, 24, 44, 64, and 84 miles
Distance to next aid station - 6.6 miles for solo, 6 miles for relay
Conant Rd (the turnaround) - located at Conant Rd entrance to park
Solo runners will hit this aid station at 12.8, 37.8, 62.8, and 87.8 miles
Relay runners will hit this aid station at 10, 30, 50, 70, and 90 miles
Distance to next aid station - 6 miles for solo and for relay
There will be a Port-a-Pottie at this aid station.
No family, friends, or crew are permitted at the Conant Rd aid station.  Doing so will disqualify your runner
Middle Earth (heading back to S/F)
Solo runners hit this aid station at 18.8, 43.8, 68.8, and 93.8 miles
Relay runners hit this aid station at 16, 36, 56, 76, and 96 miles
Distance to next aid station - 6.2 miles for solo, 4 miles for relay
Solo runners please note: The route is slightly longer on the “out” (12.8 miles) to the Conant Rd turnaround vs coming back (12.2 miles) = 25 mile lap.
Note:  Tailwind offered at aid stations will be Mandarin orange flavored mixed in 1 scoop/ 12 oz ratio  There are single serve packets of caffeinated Tailwind available at the Conant Road Aid Station.
A note about special diets: We aim to have a variety of foods available at the aid stations, but cannot guarantee specific diet foods will be available to you (e.g., vegan, gluten free).  If you are concerned about your specific diet requirements, please pack your favorite snacks to have in a drop bag or with your crew at the Start/Finish.
A note about plastic:  While this is not officially a cupless race, you can help us reduce waste by bringing your own portable cup.
Pacers:
Pacers must register as a pacer and get a pacer bib.  No pacers for relay teams.  Pacers allowed anytime after 50 miles.  Only one pacer per runner at a time, but you may have different pacers on each of the last two 25-mile legs if you like.  Pacers must sign a waiver and get a pacer’s bib.  This may be done any time before they start (see Race Directors at the S/F to sign in).  If at all possible, we encourage this to be done at the packet pick-up.  All pacers must check in with RDs table (Start/Finish) before their leg.
Pacers may run ahead, with, or behind their runner.  No muling.  Bicycles may not ride along with runners.  Infractions can lead to disqualification of your runner.
Cut off times:
Soft cutoff:
50 miles: 11:00pm Saturday.  It is strongly recommended that you reach the 50 mile mark by 11:00pm in order to stay on track for the overall cutoff.  Aid station volunteers will remind runners.
Hard cutoff (enforced):
75 miles: 6:30am Sunday.  You must be leaving the Start/Finish Aid Station at 6:30am.
87.8 miles: 10:30am Sunday.  You must be leaving the Conant Road Aid Station at 10:30am.
2:00pm Sunday - course closes
Relay:
Teams’ bib numbers will correspond to the lap they are running. Instead of a “baton”, we will do an elbow bump as the handoff.  Teams are subject to the 10:30am cut off at Conant (90 miles), Sunday morning, last lap.  You may track your runner with our shared Google sheet (a link to the sheet will be provided and you will need to download the free Google Sheets app for your phone) shared on our website, Riverlands100.com.  In case of cell service issues, plan to have an estimate ahead of time from your runner as to when they should be at the relay transfer.
Course Markings:
The course will be well-marked with orange, reflective flagging and arrow signs at critical turns.
There will be signs to indicate you are about to head off course.  Where relay and solo course separates, there will be specific arrows directing solo and relays and wrong way signs if you mistakenly choose the wrong course.  And remember: flags are always on your right going out and always on your left coming back.
The Trail:
The race course is on ATV trails and single track in Androscoggin Riverlands State Park.  We do not have exclusive use of the trails on race day, you may share the trails with mountain bikers, horseback riders, and hikers.  The park is closed to ATVs for the weekend, except for those volunteering for our race.
After the Race:
Runners finishing before the 32 hour cutoff may want to stay for others’ finishes (as long as you are able to maintain proper spacing) or head back to their campsites/hotels to clean up and/or rest before post-race party and awards.  Martin Stream Campground is open for all runners to shower, even those not camping there.
Noon - 3pm
Enjoy the post race party at Martin Stream Campground!  We’ll have vegan and vegetarian and meat burrito options as well as chili from a favorite local restaurant, Guthries.  We will also have soft drinks, water, and beer.
AWARDS
When all the runners are off the course and have made it to the party, we will award the 100 buckles, the relay hoodies, our special Adirondack chairs for top male and female 100 milers, the Beast Bowl to the winning relay team, and the Last Mule in the Barn prize.

APRIL 6, 2021:
We’re coming right down to the wire!! Just about a month to go. Anyone looking forward to their taper?Just a quick note to let you know we are placing the order for hoodies and tees on Monday, April 12th. Every runner will have a tee shirt in their race packet. Relay runners who finish will get a “Relay Finisher” hoodie. Any solo runner who would like a hoodie or extra tee for their crew or pacer or, maybe a “Finisher” hoodie for yourself may order one before 4pm on Monday. We will be ordering the red hoodie you may have seen on our Facebook page. It is available through our website store. If you like one of the past hoodie or tee colors better, you may order one of those if we have your size in stock.
Note, we do not let runners who do not finish have a “Finisher” hoodie. If you ordered a finisher hoodie and don't finish, but you'd still like a commemorative hoodie, you can get a blank (just the buckle design) version instead.  You can message us for more details. If you do not order a hoodie before the 12th, you may still order, but they will be substantially more due to additional costs from our supplier and printer.
Remember, we’ll be having our pre-race meeting via Zoom on May 1st (stay tuned for meeting time and link).  If you haven’t already, please look over our website for all the details about the race. Have a question you don’t see the answer to? We’ll answer them all on the 1st.

MARCH 2, 2021:
The details are all coming together nicely for our race.  We hope your training is going well; it’s just under 10 weeks until GO!
We have some event modifications to fill you in on:
  • Pre-race Meeting:  We will hold our pre-race meeting virtually via Zoom on May 1st, the Saturday before the start.  Attendance is mandatory.  We cover all the usual things, course markings, pacing rules, relay rules, as well as any new COVID 19 considerations.  We will send a link and more details as we get closer to the date.
  • Packet Pickup: This year, packet pickup will be at Martin Stream Campground, under an outdoor pavilion from 3pm to 7pm.  This is where you will leave your drop bags (marked with aid station, your name and bib number).
  • Pasta Dinner: Normally, we enjoy a great spaghetti dinner put on by the local ATV club.  With the state limits on indoor dining, we are unable to feast together this year, but it will be back for sure!  You can check out our website for a list of local restaurants and grocery stores if you need ideas for dinner.  Also, for those of you who purchased extra pre-race meals, we would like to offer you a race tee(s) as a refund.  Please email shirt size(s) to vjabradi@gmail.com.
  • Race Start:  Currently, outside events in Maine are limited to 100 people.  In order to comply, we are asking runners to come to the start line alone, no crew/pacer.   Once we say go, the start area will be clear of runners and your people can be there for you when you get back to the start/finish area.  We will have our runner tracker available for everyone to use.  Only the relay runner doing the first leg should show up for the 6am start.
We know a 100 mile race is an amazing feat that you all want to share with your loved ones, but please limit the numbers who come to the Start/Finish.
  • Post-race Party/Awards:  We’ll be back at Martin Stream Campground for refueling and celebrating.  Runners who finish before the cutoff are welcome starting at noon, Sunday.  We’ll have food, drinks, and physically-distanced outside celebration!  Awards will be at 3pm.  Normally, we only give the buckles out at the award ceremony, mailing those to runners who choose not to attend (we love celebrating everyones’ race 🤩😍👊!) .  We do understand there may be folks who are uncomfortable staying for a party, so, this year only, we will award the buckles at the finish to folks who will not be staying for the party, even though it breaks our hearts a little...
The good news is that this ain’t our first COVID race rodeo! We successfully pulled off the Big Brad Ultras in person in October.  We will share our protocols with you in the pre-race meeting.
Canadian runners, we know you all have an additional worry; will the border be open by then?  If it is not, but we are still able to have the race, you have some options.  We have a large waitlist.  You can make the call to withdraw right up until April 22nd.  If we can fill your spot from the waitlist, you will get a full refund.  We will also give you the opportunity to register first for 2022.  If we cannot fill your spot, we will give you the deferral option that we allowed in 2020.  Make sense?  Feel free to email for clarifications.
As always, our website is chock full of information and answers to questions you may have: www.riverlands100.com  You can also check out our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/TrailMonsterRunning) for race chatter, pictures, and advice from others!
We hope to see you all in May and cheer you on to a Riverlands100 buckle!!!

JAN 2, 2021:
With 2020 in our rear view, we wanted to  reach out to all our solo runners training for 2021 to give you an update on what we’re working on for this year’s race regarding COVID.  You train hard and well; we aim to pull this off!!  We know many of you shared our sadness at having to cancel the 2020 race, but are very happy you deferred and will get it done in 2021!
We know there still may need to be some modifications/adaptations; these are the type of contingencies we are working on right now:

  • Packet Pickup: If we are unable to be inside for packet pickup, we have an outdoor pavilion lined up to safely get you your race bib and swag.
  • Pasta Dinner: We’re hoping to be able to dine together, but if not, we have several options in mind to have a to-go box ready for you.
  • Post-race Party: Again, we hope to be able to give hugs and celebrate together, but if not, we’ll make sure the awards and post-race celebrations are conducted in a safe manner.
The good news is that this ain’t our first COVID race rodeo! We  successfully pulled off the Big Brad Ultras in person in October and can implement the same safety procedures if need be.  The only thing that would force us to cancel is if the state reduces the size of outdoor gatherings allowed.  With spring and vaccines, we do not anticipate that being the case.  If it does, we will again offer refunds and deferrals with last year’s rules.
Canadian runners, we know you all have an additional worry; will the border be open by then?  If it is not, but we are still able to have the race, you have some options.  We have a large waitlist.  You can make the call to withdraw up right up until April 22nd.  If we can fill your spot from the waitlist, you will get a full refund.  We will also give you the opportunity to register first for 2022.  If we cannot fill your spot, we will give you the deferral option that we allowed in 2020.  Make sense?  Feel free to email for clarifications.
We hope to see you all in May and cheer you on to a Riverlands100 buckle!!!
